Saint John Chrysostom prepares us for the Solemnity of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Today's Communion Antiphon is a text of the Apostle Paul placed in the golden mouth of the glorious Archbishop of Constantinople: "We preach Christ crucified, the power of God and the wisdom of God" (1 Cor 1:23–224). Tomorrow the power and wisdom of God will radiate from the glorious Cross into the whole universe.

Thanks to the Cross we are no longer in a state of widowhood,
for we are reunited to the Bridegroom;
we are not afraid of the wolf,
because we have the Good Shepherd. . . .
Thanks to the Cross we dread no usurper,
since we are sitting beside the King.

(Saint John Chrysostom, Homily I on the Cross and the Thief)

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON

MR
They that are learned
shall shine as the brightness of the firmament:
and they that instruct many to justice,
as stars for all eternity (cf. Dan 12:3).

ACT OF PENITENCE

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins,
that we may be ready to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

You, Christ our God,
are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies.
Kyrie, eleison.

You are seated on the throne of the Cherubim;
you are Lord of the Seraphim.
Christe, eleison.

You came and fulfilled
the whole divine plan for our sakes.
Kyrie, eleison.

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
and lead us, with our sins forgiven,
into eternal life.

COLLECT

O God, the strength of those who hope in you,
who willed that your bishop, Saint John Chrysostom
should be renowned for a wonderful eloquence,
and for the endurance of hardships,
grant, we beseech you, that instructed by his teaching,
we may be strengthened
by the example of his invincible patience.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever and ever.

GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

That the Church in East and in West
and, in particular, the Church of Constantinople,
may be graced in our day
with wise and holy hierarchs,
and with divinely eloquent preachers of the Gospel,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That the apostolic journey of Pope Benedict XVI
to his homeland
may bear abundant fruits
of conversion, holiness, and new beginnings,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That all world leaders of good will,
may be guided into the way of peace
with wisdom and light from above,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That the victims of war, their loved ones,
and those working to relieve their suffering,
may be comforted in their sorrow,
and sustained in carrying their burden,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

That, through the intercession of Saint John Chrysostom,
we who prepare today to enter at Vespers
into the radiance of the Holy and Glorious Cross,
may be disposed to receive the fruits of the Tree of Life
with humility and compunction,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

COLLECT AT THE GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

God of truth and steadfast love,
who gave to Saint John Chrysostom,
Archbishop of Constantinople,
eloquence to declare your righteousness
in the midst of the great assembly,
and courage to bear reproach
for the honour of your name:
mercifully grant to those who minister your Word
such excellence in preaching
that all people may partake with them
of the glory given us now in the holy mysteries,
and prepared for us in the heavenly liturgy of the Kingdom.
Through Christ our Lord.

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON

GR
The just shall flourish like the palm tree;
he shall grow up like the cedar of Lebanon (Ps 91:13).

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

O God,
may you be pleased
by the sacrifice we gladly set before you
in commemoration of Saint John Chrysostom;
formed by what he taught, and united in praise,
may we, like him, surrender ourselves completely to you.
Through Christ our Lord.

PREFACE

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

Christ sowed the word among us
as the seed of a rich harvest
in the lives of those who believe.

Night and day, Saint John Chrysostom meditated on your word
and from the fruit of contemplation
drew his teaching of your truth.

In that same word
he found the unfailing source of wisdom
to lead a life of holiness
and instruct your Church in the doctrine of salvation.

Now, as we celebrate his memory
we join with the host of angels and saints
in their exultant hymn of praise:

COMMUNION ANTIPHON

MR
We preach Christ crucified,
Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Cor 1:23–24).

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Merciful God,
grant that the mysteries we have received
in commemoration of Saint John Chrysostom
may confirm us in your charity,
and make us faithful confessors of your truth.
Through Christ our Lord.
