Today's Mass sings of the ineffable mercy of God who chose Saint Matthew to cling to Him as resolutely and doggedly as he once clung to his money. The opening phrase of he Postcommunion might better be translated as, "Ours, O Lord, is the joy of new found wholeness"! The coming of Christ the Saviour brings salvation. The coming of Christ the Healer brings health to soul and body. The Most Holy Eucharist restores the broken to wholeness in anticipation of the Kingdom where He who sits upon the throne will say, "Behold, I make all things new" (Ap 21:5).

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON

MR
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them,
and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you,
says the Lord (Mt 28:19–20)

ACT OF PENITENCE

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins,
that we may be ready to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

You speak to us in the holy Gospel.
Kyrie, eleison.

You are the physician of those who are sick (cf., Mt 9:12).
Christe, eleison.

You came not to call the righteous, but sinners (Mt 9:13).
Kyrie, eleison.

May Almighty God have mercy on us,
and lead us, with our sins forgiven,
into eternal life.

COLLECT

O God, who in your ineffable mercy,
were pleased to choose Saint Matthew,
once a publican, to be your Apostle,
grant that, strengthened by his example and intercession,
and following you,
we may be found worthy of cleaving to you immovably.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever and ever.

GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

For the holy Catholic Church;
that faithful to the newness of the Gospel,
she may proclaim to all
the inexhaustible mercy of God, revealed in Christ,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

For Pope Benedict XVI;
that he may rejoice in the good fruits of his labours,
and be preserved from all harm,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

For all world leaders of good will;
that, for the sake of peace and justice everywhere,
they may be gifted with wisdom and understanding,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

For all who suffer;
that they may experience the mercy of Christ
and the comfort of the Holy Spirit,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

For ourselves;
that illumined by the pure light of the Gospel,
we may prefer nothing to the love of Christ
who, in his mercy, calls us again to his table,
to the Lord we pray: Christ, hear us. R. CHRIST, GRACIOUSLY HEAR US.

COLLECT AT THE GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

Almighty and ever-living God,
whose only–begotten Son called Matthew, the tax collector,
to be an apostle and evangelist:
give us, we beseech you, grace to forsake the selfish pursuit of gain,
that we, like Saint Matthew, may rise to a new life
and find our joy in the food and drink
given us here at the table of your mercy,
and prepared for us in the kingdom,
at the Banquet of the Lamb.
Through Christ our Lord.

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON

GR
O Lord, You have set on his head a crown of precious stones:
he asked life of You,
and You have given it to him, alleluia (Ps 20:4–5).

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Recalling the memory of Saint Matthew,
we bring to you, O Lord, our prayers and sacrificial offerings,
humbly imploring that you would look kindly upon your Church,
whose faith you have nourished by the preaching of the Apostles.
Through Christ our Lord.

PREFACE
(Ambrosian Missal, trans. Alan Griffiths)

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

In Christ your Son
you reveal your compassion for humankind
and in mercy you invite sinners
to sit at the banquet of your kingdom.

Saint Matthew responded to the call of Christ
and made Him welcome in his house.

Changed and renewed by the coming of the Lord
he dedicated himself to proclaim
your wonderful works of salvation.

To his preaching of the Gospel
we respond with gladness,
joining all the powers of heaven
in this, their ceaseless hymn of praise:

COMMUNION ANTIPHON
MR
I came not to call the righteous,
but sinners, says the Lord (Mt 9:13).

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Ours, O Lord, is the joy of salvation
which gladdened Saint Matthew
as he received the Saviour at table in his house;
grant that, we may ever be refreshed by the very food of Him
who came to call not the righteous,
but sinners to salvation.
Through Christ our Lord.
